2014 Challenges

Here are a list of the reading challenges in which I am participating in 2014, along with the novels I plan to read for each challenge.  There is a link to the main page on WWEnd for each challenge, and I will link my reviews here as well, when they are complete.

Edit: All of my reviews for the 2014 challenges are now complete!  The only one I have not reviewed is Terry Pratchett's Going Postal. This is only because I received the news of Sir Pratchett's death shortly before beginning to write, and I was too saddened to feel able to write a review as usual. I highly recommend Going Postal, particularly for anyone who wants a comic/serious Discworld book about corporate greed and an expert conman using his talents to benefit society.

12 Awards in 12 Months

This is a challenge I proposed, which is to read 12 novels which have won 12 different awards.  My selected books are as follows:

Hugo: Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie
Nebula: The Quantum Rose, by Catherine Asaro
Campbell (Memorial): The Islanders, by Christopher Priest
Clarke: Song of Time, by Ian R. MacLeod
BSFA: Jack Glass, by Adam Roberts
Locus SF: The Integral Trees, Larry Niven
Locus F: The Claw of the Conciliator, by Gene Wolfe
Locus YA: The Girl Who Soared Over Fairyland and Cut the Moon in Two, by Catherynne M. Valente
World Fantasy: A Stranger in Olondria, Sofia Samatar
Philip K. Dick: Dinner at Deviant's Palace, by Tim Powers
BFS: The Dragon and the George, by Gordon R. Dickson
Mythopoeic: The Golem and the Jinni, by Helene Wecker

The Second Best

This is a challenge to read 12 novels that were nominated by twelve different awards, without having won any of those awards.

Hugo: Neptune's Brood, by Charles Stross
Nebula: The Kingdom of Gods, by N.K. Jemisin
Campbell (Memorial): Axis, by Robert Charles Wilson
Clarke: Nexus, by Ramez Naam
BSFA: Intrusion, by Ken MacLeod
Locus SF: Caliban's War, by James S.A. Corey
Locus F: Going Postal by Terry Pratchett
Locus YA: The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There, by Catherynne M. Valente
World Fantasy: Mockingbird, by Sean Stewart
Philip K. Dick: Tea With the Black Dragon, by R.A. MacAvoy
BFS: The Servants, by Michael Marshall Smith
Mythopoeic: The New Moon's Arms, by Nalo Hopkinson

I Just HAVE to Read More by That Author

This is a challenge to read more books by authors I've really loved. This has some overlap from the previous two challenges. Here's my current list:

The Broken Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin
The Kingdom of Gods by N.K. Jemisin
Caliban's War by James S.A. Corey
Abaddon's Gate by James S.A. Corey
Dinner at Deviant's Palace, by Tim Powers
The Islanders, by Christopher Priest
Two Serpents Rise, by Max Gladstone
The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There, by Catherynne M. Valente
Anathem, by Neal Stephenson
The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
Going Postal, by Terry Pratchett

Fantasia

This one is to read 12 fantasy novels!  I tend to read a little more science fiction than fantasy, so this seemed a nice chance to lean the other way. This challenge has a lot of overlap with the other three.

The Broken Kingdoms, by N.K. Jemisin
The Kingdom of Gods, by N.K. Jemisin
The Way of Kings, by Brandon Sanderson
The Islanders, by Christopher Priest
Warbound, by Larry Correia
A Stranger in Olondria, Sofia Samatar
The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There, by Catherynne M. Valente
The Golem and the Jinni, by Helene Wecker
Tea With the Black Dragon, by R.A. MacAvoy
The New Moon's Arms by Nalo Hopkinson
The Dragon and the George, by Gordon R. Dickson
The Servants, by Michael Marshall Smith
